Re: The Witch and the Wolf
Krystine changed back to a human - or witch, whichever you prefer - and glanced around. St. Peter's Basillica in Rome. I guess changing forms can do some really strange things to distance." She ssighed and looked down at the people milling in the streets. "Hopefully they don't know me here." She mused, more to herself than Tyler.
Re: The Witch and the Wolf
[Whoa, weren't we just in England??]
Tyler just sat there...and blinked. Speed-shock.

[Yep. We were. Oh the joy of distance travelling ^^]
Krystine laughed. "That's how I got to England in the first place. I was originally from Canada." She smiled at the fond memories. "Okay, c'mon. We gotta get down somehow." She stood up and turned around, walking across the roof to a panel.

Tyler nodded, trying to get his head around both this AND the premature transformation. He managed to stop the tail from growing, and to get the fur to float off like dead leaves; but the ears were the last to go, and he couldn't push anything past that while the spell was still in effect. He'd need more time.
He stood up and dusted himself off, then looked at his hands. Great. Another pair of gloves, ruined.

Great. The door was locked. No problem, though. She pulled on the lock and uttered a few words, and it clicked open. She smiled brightly and started down the stairwell, trusting her son to follow. A spark ignited in her palm and she held it around as she descended down the staircase. The artwork was intricate, even up near the top. She couldn't wait until she got the bottom, where it had to be the most stunning paintings ever. She smiled, finally visiting the old building.
Re: The Witch and the Wolf
Tyler paused at the top of the stairs. The Wolf didn't want to go down. It was tired of the dark. His arms and shoulders shook from the effort of the repression, an effort alike to holding back a summer tide with only one's hands. Follow Mother.
The beast finally complied.
But he noted that it was becoming harder by the day.

"Tyler!" The woman snapped without turning around. Her acute ears could pick up even the tiniest sound, and most certainly her son's hesitation. "Learn to control yourelf!" She reminded him. She finally reached the first landing and turned to the right, only to find another set of stairs. "They should really put and elevator in here." She muttered to herself.
Re: The Witch and the Wolf
Right. Control.
Three days left and it was still unusually hard to revert, and he almost began to panic. Control...
He hated the dark. He hated the oncoming smells, hitting him from every direction. And his mother's voice, normally his only lifeline, had become an agitated grating on his eardrums. Breathe.
Checked his teeth with his tongue, and found them finally shrunk enough to properly talk. Ths gums and shoulderblades ached. "Where are we now?"

"We're nearly to the bottom, my dear. Don't worry." She turned her head around and smiled encouragingly. The fact he was struggling to control himself had not evaded her notice. They would stay here for the night and probably until he got out of the wolf phase...
Re: The Witch and the Wolf
The smell of the pancakes held his attention better than the mold and mildew, and he licked his lips. Still warm, probably still just as delicious despite their rather hasty brush with magic. His stomach gurgled quietly, and he licked his lips. What a shame they'd had to leave with a little less than they'd wanted. The lady was so nice, too, he thought wistfully.
Then he paused, sniffing the air beyond the aroma. "Mum, stop."

Re: The Witch and the Wolf
Krystine stopped immedeatly, and turned around slowly to face him, a questionable expression obvious. She arched an eyebrow expectantly. "Why do we need to stop? it said. She trusted her son's judgement, though. So she did stop and waited.
Re: The Witch and the Wolf
Tyler waited also, listening. There was something very wrong here. His eyes, a pair of dull coins in the darkness, peered into the gloom to attempt to pierce whatever it was that had him on edge. His instincts churned, made the hairs rise on the back of his neck. "Back away," he whispered, taking a step forward himself as what appeared to be a single loose thread of violet, like a lone string, materialized within his sight. The Wolf was showing him something only he could see.
The thread flickered, so many inches from where his mother stood, but did not move with anything more than a breeze from something open down below, a breeze that moaned between the pipes, around the string, within the mouths of the deathwatches in the walls. Even the spiders spoke of it, their inaudible songs ringing of danger.
Tyler swallowed. Something sorcerous, something bad.
The magical line had no end, just disappeared into the blackness, floating on nothing, but leading into their proposed destination. A trap?

Re: The Witch and the Wolf
Krystine wanted to warn him to stat away, the way all mother's want to warn their kids to stay away from danger. It was just instinct to keep them away, right? But what harm could possibly come to him that she couldn't incinerate in a half second? She was still trying to decide when her son's barely audible orders echoed through the narrow stairwell.
"Back away,"
Slowly, she took one quiet step back. Then another. She didn't look back over her shoulder to see if she was heading into the danger. No, why would she need to do that? Her son was obviously facing whatever it was that she needed to be wary of.
Krystine glanced at her son, who seemed to be focused on something in front of her. She squinted, trying to see whatever it was, but being unable to do so. She wanted to try to use a vision spell, but she feared it would only complicate things for Tyler. She threw a questioning look at him, not quite sure of the extent of the danger.

Re: The Witch and the Wolf
He spared a quick glance to make sure she was well away from the entrance, then returned his focus. She mentioned something about paintings, didn't she? "Mum? What did you say would be in this room?" He whispered, afraid to raise his voice any higher than necessary. Maybe it would be a clue to whatever it was that had alerted them, whatever it was lurking inside.

"I didn't say anything." She whispered. "Just thought about it..." She cocked her head to the side and said much more confidently, "There's a lot of old artwork in this building, it cover's the walls everywhere..." She trailed off, unsure of what he was asking about.
Re: The Witch and the Wolf
No light, he registered, realizing at once that his eyes could not penetrate the darkness within the room. It was almost like a hazy wall or veil. The violet wire flickered, swayed gently with the unknown breeze. Is it...alive? "...And how old do you guess they'd be?"

Re: The Witch and the Wolf
"A little over a hundred years old." She whispered, following her son's eyes intently, wanting to know what was so intriguing. No, intriguing made it sound good. Whatever this was, it wasn't good. She could smell the dark magic working its power here, and she could taste the sorcery on the tip of her tongue. Slowly, she drew her rowan wand and opened her mouth to begin the warding spell.

Re: The Witch and the Wolf
"No, don't." Tyler bared his teeth. He'd figured it out. "It's a glamour."
But not like the ones his mother made. This was an anti-sorcerous trap designed to ensnare a practitioner, and badly. Someone was expecting them. And powerful magic, at that, anchored to the oldest objects in the room to retain their power - the paintings. If she used her magic, it would capture her and possibly not let her go.
Someone was expecting us. Who else was after them, to perform this level of sorcery?

Re: The Witch and the Wolf
Krystine inhaled sharply and turned her attention to the paintings. "Tyler, come. We'll find another way out." She said quietly, but sternly. She didn't know if this particular glamour had any listening abilities. Sshe didn't want whatever was controlling it to figure out who exactly they were facing. That gave them an enormous advantage. They'd probably been waiting here for her, though. She scanned her memories for sorcerers that would want her. She couldn't think of any until...
"Dr. John Dee." She muttered.
"Dr. John Dee." She muttered.
Re: The Witch and the Wolf
Tyler looked at her questioningly. "Who's that?" He wondered, backing away up the stairs carefully with her. It sounded familiar, but he couldn't be sure.

Re: The Witch and the Wolf
"Long time ago." She muttered to herself absently. She looked at Tyler and nodded. "You know Queen Elizabeth I?" She didn't wait for his answer. "Well, her personal magician was Dr. John Dee. He found a way to keep himself alive, and he's been chasing witches like me for centuries." She retreated up the first stair, watching the glamour closely. "And since I have you, it would be like a double win."
Re: The Witch and the Wolf
He followed, still on high-alert, and even more alarmed with this release of information. "Does the Vatican know about any of this??" A legitimate question. Many times did Tyler wonder just who and how many people his mother had managed to tick off in the past, and this was not an exceptional moment. Nor would he be overly surprised at her answer to that question.

Re: The Witch and the Wolf
Krystine shook her head. "It's a highly personal..." she searched for the right word, "mission." She finally went with. Another step she slowly went up backwards. The glamour slowly continued to inch toward them.
"Tyler," she said in a strangely calm voice. "when I say run, turn up the steps and run as fast as you can. Don't look back."

Re: The Witch and the Wolf
Tyler gulped and nodded, already moving. Maybe because it sensed them there, so close, that it was moving on its own. Either way, he didn't plan to be around to get caught in it any more than she did. Mission? Focus. Get ready to run.

Re: The Witch and the Wolf
"RUN!!" Krystine's powerful voice echoes through the chambers, magnified by some sort of curse she'd placed in the walls. Stones and dust crumbled and the ceiling groaned, as if i t was going to cave in. The ground began to shake ever so slightly, though her feet stayed firmly planted on the ground, showing she had no intention of leaving.
"Begone with you! Evil demon sent from the one called John Dee, I command you, by the powers of Heaven and Hell, to leave and never come back!" She yelled, her voice strong and steady and reliable. She held her arm out at shoulder height, palm facing out. Blue waves radiated off of her hand, flying towards the glamour. As the pulsing ripples of energy hit the glowing thread, it began to vibrate and jump around. It spasmed one last time before exploding into a shower of purple light and heat.
