The principal looked sorry for Nicole and handed her a tissue. "There there," he said. "I know it's hard being at school the first day. But then again you punched her, and that hurts a lot worse than a spitball does." He frowned, looking serious.

Derek stood up behind Nicole. "But Mr. Vito, like Nicole said, it's her first day here. You wouldn't really want a new student to spend her first day in boring ol' detention, would you? Besides, she's my friend."

When the principal heard Derek call Nicole a friend he began to smile again. "Well I guess I can make this exception this one time. You're a very lucky lady, miss," he told Nicole.

Nicole dabbed at the fake tears and smiled,"Thanks, Mr. Vito."She said,"So are we excused to go back to class?"

"Oh yes, go ahead," Mr. Vito said. "I'll speak to your teacher as well later and the girl who fired a spitball."

"It was Cindy," Derek told Mr. Vito.

Mr. Vito suddenly frowned. "Cindy? The head cheerleader? I can't put her in detention. Oh well I'll speak to her anyway. Anyway you two go now and stay out of trouble."

"Me too, Mr Vito?" Derek asked, pretending to be innocent.

"Of course you too, Derek!" the principal said. "You're the best student in the school, of course I'd never put you in detention. Now you take your friend and go back to class."

Derek grinned. "Thanks, sir," he said, and held the door open for Nicole. "After you."

Nicole smiled as she walked out of the office,"Best student in the school?"She asked smiling.

Derek walked beside Nicole, his hands behind his head. "Mehh, well, they kind of overdo it a bit. Just because I get good grades and do good on the football team, they seem to like that," he shrugged. Suddenly he stopped and grinned, an idea coming to his head. "Say, you really wanna go back to class now? I can show you around the school, if you like."

She laughed,"Hell,why not.It's not like anybody's going to miss me."She said smiling at him.

Derek laughed. "True that. Come on!" He took Nicole's hand and broke into a run down the empty hallways, the hallways were still empty because classes were going on.

Nicole laughed and ran beside him,"What is this,the super sonic tour?"She asked and ran a little faster.

"It's a big school! You gotta run to get to places," Derek laughed. Running felt good, he hated it when the halls were all filled and you had to dodge a lot of people. He held tightly to Nicole's hand as they ran to the end of the hall.

He showed her first the regular classrooms, important rooms like the labs, and soon they came to a big door. "Here's the auditorium," he said, "one of my favorite places." He held the door open for her.

She walked in and stopped when she saw how beautiful the place was,"Wow."She said,other than that she was speechless.

"Beautiful isn't it?" Derek said. "It's really old but the sound is great here." Squeezing her hand a bit, they walked down the aisle to the stage. "Do you like singing?" he asked, grinning.

"Ya.I use to do talent shows with my sis."Nicole replied.

"Can I hear you sing?" Derek asked, making doggy eyes at her. "Pretty please? There's a mike up there."He pointed at the stage, which had a mike on its stand

She got a deer in the headlights look,"I don't know."She said nervously.

"Aww, come on, it'll be fun!" Derek grinned. Letting go of her hand, a little reluctantly, he climbed onto the stage and held his hand out to her. "Come on I'll help you up. I can't sing a tune to save my life but I can play a good piano" he laughed.

Nicole bit her lower lip,then she smiled,"Fine,but only this one time."She said and got on the stage, "Got a certain song?"She asked looking at him.

Derek opened the piano keyboard and ran his fingers deftly across the keys. "You pick," he said. "I'll just follow along." He sat down and cracked his knuckles.

She laughed,"To tell you the truth I can't think of any songs that have piano."She said.

Derek laughed. "I'll have you know, Bright Eyes, the piano can accompany ANY song!" he grinned. "Okay then, what about... ummm... who are your favorite singers anyway?" he asked suddenly not knowing what to play. He scratched the back of his head.

She smiled thinking,"Really anything country,and rock bands like Avenge Sevenfold and 30 seconds to Mars."She said sitting down on the stage.

"Crap. I'm really old-timey," Derek laughed, "the only thing we have in common is country music." He began playing a few notes on the piano. "Hey, how about this one by Rihanna? You know it?"

"No... hey, why don't you sing some of it for me?" Derek suggested. "I'll pick up on the piano." He grinned.

She started singing the song.It was a sad song but one of her favorites.When she was done she looked back at him.

Derek listened to her first line, then picked up the piano part for the rest of the song. When they were done he looked at her pretending to pout. "Great now you've got me all depressed," he grinned. "You have a great voice though."
